Author Guidelines

Types of Articles

The Amazonian Journal of Science and Technology (RACYT) accepts manuscripts in English and Spanish in the following article types. All article types must include an Introduction, Methodology/Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, and References.

RACYT is open to receiving manuscripts that have been previously published as preprints, provided they comply with the Author Guidelines and the preprint ID is submitted.

Original Research:

This is the most common journal manuscript type used to publish comprehensive reports of research data. Manuscripts should be no longer than 5,000 words, including the Introduction through the Conclusions. The Title, Abstract, Keywords, and References will not be counted.

Brief Communications:

These documents communicate brief reports of original research data that the editors believe will be of interest to many researchers and likely to stimulate further research in their field of study. Manuscripts should be no longer than 3,000 words, counting from the Introduction to the Conclusions. The Title, Abstract, Keywords, and References will not be counted. These strict length limits mean that some experimental details may not be published until the authors have written a full original research manuscript.

Review Articles:

Review Articles provide a comprehensive overview of research on a given topic and an overview of the field's current state and future direction. Reviews are typically widely read and cited. Review Articles usually cite approximately 100 primary research articles. Manuscripts should be no longer than 10,000 words, counting from the Introduction to the Conclusions. The Title, Abstract, Keywords, and References will not be counted. Systematic reviews should follow the PRISMA guidelines (http://prisma-statement.org/).

Book Reviews

The RACYT Editorial Committee believes that book reviews occupy a prominent place in academic publishing.

Book reviews written in English or Spanish are published in the journal. Reviews published in the journal are assigned Digital Object Identifier (DOI) numbers, which are submitted to the indexes where the journal is searched.

What is a book review?

Book reviews are discussions of a collection or compilation (book, article, collection, etc.) while simultaneously presenting the publication along with commentary and critical contributions.

Book reviews differ from book reports. A book report only informs the reader about the book's content, whereas in a review, the content is only part of the discussion. Book reviews are expected to present constructive criticism of the book's subject matter and the way these topics are addressed, critiquing the ideas presented in the text. In addition, the book's most prominent ideas, as well as the coherence of those ideas and the methods used to cite sources, should be critically evaluated.

Reviews are intended for a broad audience of academics and professionals with diverse perspectives.

Book reviews are evaluated by the editors.

Content Guidelines

All types of articles must consider the following elements:

Concise, clear, and technical discourse, written in an impersonal style. Simple sentences should predominate, except in contexts that require a more detailed description and argumentation of the content; and provided that the syntax is orderly and efficient. The content presented must be understandable to scientists working outside the article's subject area.

Cover Page:

  • The Title should be relevant and reflect the essence of the research. In the case of review manuscripts, it must be identified whether it is a systematic review or a meta-analysis.
  • List of Authors and Affiliations: The full names of the authors must be provided. In addition, complete information about each author's affiliation must be provided, including the full name of their institution, city, country, email address, and ORCID. At least one and no more than two authors must be designated as corresponding authors, and their email address and other details should be included at the end of the affiliation section.
  • The Abstract should reflect the internal structure of the work. It should be written in the past tense, except for the introduction and conclusions, which should be in the present tense. It should not exceed 200 words.

Abbreviations or acronyms within the text will be used if their use is justified, and the first time the concept they replace is used, it must be declared in parentheses.

Sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions

  • The Introduction should briefly present the study within a broader context and highlight its importance. It should define the purpose of the work and its significance, including the specific hypotheses being tested. The current state of the research field should be carefully reviewed, and key publications should be cited. Controversial and divergent hypotheses should be highlighted when necessary. Finally, briefly state the main objective of the work.
  • Materials and Methods or Methodology should be described in sufficient detail to allow others to replicate and build upon the published results. New methods and protocols should be described in detail, while well-established methods can be briefly described and properly cited. Provide the name and version of any software, equipment, or instruments used in the research.
  • Results and Discussion should provide a concise and accurate description of the experimental results, their interpretation, and the experimental conclusions that can be drawn. The authors should discuss the results and how they can be interpreted considering previous studies and the working hypotheses. The findings and their implications should be discussed in the broadest possible context, and the limitations of the work should be highlighted.
  • Conclusions should address the implications of the findings and their relationship to the stated objective.

When Reviewing a Book or Books, the following aspects should be considered:

  • The book being reviewed was published within the last five years by a reputable publisher.
  • The subject matter of the work is relevant to the journal's scope and is likely to be of interest to a broad range of readers, regardless of geographical and disciplinary boundaries.
  • The review title may or may not be the same as the book's title.
  • It should contain a brief, impactful introduction that presents the work's subject matter and main argument.
  • The review should prioritize evaluation, audience perception, and conclusions over mere description, ensuring a balanced and analytical approach that meaningfully engages readers.
  • It should include a critical evaluation of the content: a thoughtful and reasoned assessment of the text and an analysis of its contribution. and its relationship to the existing literature and trends in the field, an overview of its strengths and weaknesses, and its unique qualities (if any).
  • The tone of the review should be professional. If criticism is offered, it should be expressed clearly and respectfully.
  • It should contain a conclusion that includes the reviewer's main ideas and points of emphasis.

Supplementary Material: Appendices, Acknowledgments, Authors' Contributions, Conflicts of Interest, References.

  • Appendices (Optional) are supplementary material at the end of the article, generally explanatory, statistical, or bibliographic in nature. Indicate the name and title of each item as follows: Figure A1: title, Table A1: title, etc.
  • Acknowledgments (Optional) should be brief and mention any essential support received for the completion of the work reported.
  • Funding (Optional) should disclose all sources of funding for the study. Clearly indicate any grants received in support of your research. Add: "This research did not receive external funding" or "This research was funded by [funder name] grant number [xxx]"
  • Authors' Contributions (Required): Each author is expected to have made substantial contributions to the manuscript. The contributions will be expressed in the manuscript as follows:
    • Author 1: Conceptualization, Data Curation, Formal Analysis, Fundraising, Research, Methodology, Project Management, Resources, Software, Supervision, Validation, Visualization, Drafting - preparation of the original draft, and Writing - Revision and editing.

Please carefully read the Authors' Ethical Responsibilities to qualify for authorship.

  • In the Authors' Conflict of Interest section (Required), authors must identify and declare any personal circumstances or interests that could be perceived as influencing the representation or interpretation of the reported research results. If there is no conflict of interest, please state "The authors declare no conflict of interest." Any role of the funding sponsors in the choice of research project; study design; data collection, analysis, or interpretation; manuscript drafting; or the decision to publish the results must be declared in this section. For more details, see Conflict of Interest.

General Guidelines

  • Tables will be presented within the text. Tables should be presented as closely as possible to their intended subject. Tables exceeding 15 rows should be included as appendices to the manuscript, especially if they are related to lists and inventories. All abbreviations within tables must be included in the legend. Tables should be numbered in the order they are mentioned and appear in the text. The table itself should convey information.
  • Figures (images, maps, photos, graphs) should be presented within the text, as closely as possible to their intended subject. They should be in editable JPG or PNG format (at least 600 dpi) and avoid unnecessary color variation (use a single color scheme). Pay attention to spelling and symbols. All abbreviations within figures must be included in the legend. Figures should be numbered in the order they are mentioned and appear in the text. The figure itself should convey information.
  • Citations and references should be formatted in ISO-690 style, reflecting a value close to 50% currency and coherence with the topic. The topics addressed must be addressed, and the URLs (or DOIs, where applicable) of the online sources consulted must be included. RACYT recommends using Mendeley as the bibliographic reference manager and the ISO-690 (author-date, English) citation style without the abstract.
  • Self-citation should be avoided, except to reflect the research background (if available). Citations and references related to articles published in the Revista Amazónica: Ciencia y Tecnología or other sources from the Universidad Estatal Amazónica should be limited to one title per type (article, book, research report).
  • For units of measurement, the International System of Units (SI) will be used. In chemical formulas, the valence of ions should be expressed as follows: Ca²⁺, not Ca²⁺. Isotope numbers must precede the symbols: ¹⁸
  • In numerical notation, decimals should be separated by commas (,); starting with five decimal places, the number of decimal places should be separated by a comma. Numbers are separated by spaces in groups of three, for example: 1,000,000; 25,268. Zeros should be used at the beginning of numbers less than one, including probability values, for example: p < 0.001.
  • In tables and figures, use asterisks to indicate the significance level of statistical tests: * = p < 0.05; ** = p<0.01; *** = p<0.001; ns = not significant.
  • Species names should be expressed in their scientific nomenclature, highlighted in italics when they are Latin terms, with the genus name in uppercase and the species name in lowercase. Reference to the descriptor is not mandatory and is written without italics; for example: Ocotea quixos (Lam.) Kosterm. When using the local or common name, it should be written in lowercase in parentheses after the scientific name has been stated. Throughout the manuscript, the initial of the genus and the epithet (quixos) may be used, once the genus has been fully expressed the first time it is mentioned. Taxonomic categories above the genus level are written without italics if they are in Spanish, for example: Lauraceae, Myrtaceae, etc.
  • Mathematical equations must be presented in Microsoft Word's mathematical equation format. The terms of the equations must be described at the end, in the form of a legend. Regular font should be used for formulas and italics for variables within them.
  • The 24-hour format will be used to define time periods, and dates should be declared as day, month, year.

RACYT may consider publishing multimedia files in articles or as supplementary materials. Contact the UEA Publishing House for more information.
